New record as meme NFT sells at incredible $4 million
The tongue-in-cheek meme named ‘Doge’, created by owner Atsuko Sato in 2005, pictures her dog Kabosu, a Shiba Inu, with grammatically incorrect remarks written in the foreground which represent Kabosu’s internal monologue.
Described as “one of the most iconic memes in internet history” by Don Caldwell, editor of the internet meme database Know Your Meme, Doge won the latter mentioned website’s ‘Meme of the Decade’ award in 2019. It even gained such popularity that Dogecoin was branded after the meme, a cryptocurrency that has been popularised by Elon Musk.
After a bidding war for the meme ensued between users known as @twodollahotdoge and @pleasrdao, the auction ended with the latter named @pleasrdao securing the NFT for approximately $4 million.
Charitable causes to benefit from a portion of the proceeds include Japanese Red Cross Society and the World Food Programme.
Look out for more NFTs to be released of Kabosu at auction this Friday.
