CryptoPunk alien sells for $11.75 million at Sotheby’s
Yet another seven figure NFT sale was made at the famous auction house on Thursday morning.
Known as ‘Covid Alien, so-called for the medical mask it wears, the CrpytoPunk, which is one of only nine alien punks in the series, sold for an incredible $11.75 million.
A CryptoPunk is a 24 x 24 pixelated character which has been generated at random via an algorithm. There are over 10,000 totally unique forms in existence, most of which are human, but the rarest belong to three additional groups of avatar known as zombie, ape and alien, which with only 88, 24 and 9 avatars in each group respectively, are extremely valuable.
They are the brainchild of software developers Matt Hall and John Watkinson whose creation is said to have inspired the Ethereum network. Originally released for free to anyone with an Ethereal wallet, they are widely known as some of the earliest NFTs ever minted and now among the most popular NFTs on the market.
The sale was made by NFT collector Sillytuna who is said to be donating 5% of profits to Covid-19 relief organizations and 5% to the development of more NFT projects, and purchased by Shalom Meckenzie, the largest shareholder of DraftKings and who has a net worth of $1.6 billion, according to Forbes.
Comparatively, in May, a similar collection of nine CryptoPunks sold for nearly $17 million at Christie’s.
